It was somewhat more difficult to subdue the nomad people of the Khanate, who wander over the majestic mountains of the Tian Shan range bordering on the Fergana valley. Having been for a long time almost independent of the administration of the last weak Khans, the kara-kirghiz and a portion of the Kipchaks were at first but little disposed to recognize Russian rule.
