The notes to the CD version of this Aparte release, by Jed Distler, contain a useful coinage or rubric to describe these three works, "expressive minimalism." None of the three works is exactly minimalist, even the Mozart-Adagio by Arvo Pärt, but the works collectively show that minimalism had roots in Eastern Europe before Pärt crystalized it.
