Seller's Description:
None. Very Good. A three volume set of the political letters of Junius. The first thus, collecting all letters including some not previously published, and edited by George Woodfall. Complete in three volumes. With five folding handwriting facsimile plates and one engraved plate of seals. Junius was the pseudonym of a writer of a series of political letters written between 1769 and 1772. The letters collect private and open letters, critical of the government of King George III and other individual letters and replies. Originally published in two volumes in 1772 by Henry Sampson Woodfall, the owner and editor of London newspaper The Public Advertiser. This edition is the first to include the personal correspondence between Junius and Henry Sampson Woodfall, and was edited by his son, George Woodfall, who took over his father's business in 1793. In half calf bindings with volume I rebacked with original boards and backstrip preserved. Externally, smart with light rubbing to boards and extremities. Joints to volumes II and III starting but still reasonably firm, with slight lifting to the backstrip of volume II. Very slight loss to the head of spine of volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with occasional light spots throughout. Very Good.

Seller's Description:
None. Near Fine. An attractive set of this collection of controversial political letters from the mysterious 'Junius', published in the Public Advertiser between 1769 and 1772. Features frontispieces in every volume and numerous further plates, some folding, including examples of Junius's handwriting and portraits of eighteenth-century political figures. Junius (fl. 17681773), political writer, was the pseudonym adopted by the author (or possibly authors) of a series of letters which appeared once or twice monthly (sometimes more often) in the Public Advertiser, a leading London newspaper owned by Henry Sampson Woodfall, between 21 January 1769 and 21 January 1772. In this series Juniusnamed after the popular republican hero Lucius Junius Brutusopposed the policies of George III and the administrations of the serving prime ministers, the duke of Grafton and Lord North. Now a classic of English political commentary, the correspondence owes its influence to three interrelated factors: the high whig philosophy espoused to attack tory policies and celebrated political personalities; the literary power of the letters, one of the most effective uses of slanderous polemic ever employed in English political controversy; and, finally, the uncertainty surrounding their authorship. DNB In half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, extremely attractive and in excellent condition with very little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Lovely and bright and clean throughout, with just the odd lightly spotted page, particularly the facsimile handwriting plates, or instance of slight offsetting from the plates. Near Fine.
