Seller's Description:
Near fine. 12mo, 127pp. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's black cloth, backed in vellum. Mild finger-soiling to vellum, contemporary bookplate to the front paste-down, else a sharp example. This copy SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Sherriff on the front free endpaper: "To Sydney Carroll, A small return for all you have done to Encourage me. From R. C. Sherriff. At Christmas 1930." A very light pencil note near the inscription identifies Carroll as "the producer." A different producer (James Whale) is identified on the copyright page, however the Oxford Companion to the Theatre does identify a Sydney Carroll with appropriate dates who was an "actor, dramatic critic, and theatre manager. Born in Melbourne, he settled in London and was drama critic of the Sunday Times, 1918-1923[...]". Though reprinted a number of times, it seems that the play edition is far less common in the trade than the later novelization of Sherriff's play (of which a signed limited edition was published in 1930). Thus quite scarce signed, and with a pleasing theatrical association.
