Henry R. Schoolcraft was an explorer, geologist, geographer and ethnologist who surveyed large sections of the midwest and discovered the source of the Mississippi River. During 1818 and 1819, Schoolcraft explored Missouri and Arkansas from Potosi, Missouri to what is now Springfield, Missouri. This is the journal of his trip and the first written account of an exploration of the Ozarks. The book was originally published in 1821.
