And although Stefan Parkman's 1987 recording is a wonderful addition to the slender Kraus' catalog, for Jenkins' performers, the work itself is a revelation. The soloists -- a Swede, a Finn, a Norwegian, and an American -- sing with passionate conviction. The New York orchestra and chorus play and sing with ardent enthusiasm. And Newell Jenkins conducts with an overpowering compulsion born of the unshakeable faith in the greatness of the music.
