That's because Weil's approach has been to rein in his string section so as to focus on the unusual textures Haydn created by adding instruments to the symphony orchestra and exploiting them in new ways. The expanded role of the timpani, for instance, is evident not only in the striking drum roll passage that opens the Symphony No. 103 in E flat major, but throughout, in the way that the timpani is integrated into the large-scale rhythmic structure of the outer movements of all three works.
