The rising Los Angeles figurative painter Jonas Wood is known for his bold colors and woozy perspectives--whether his canvases depict a perfectly autonomous cactus on a yellow milk crate, a famous Chinese basketball player or a cluttered domestic interior. Compact and affordable, this first monograph takes as its subject a small slice of Wood's oeuvre: sports portraiture. Collected here are lanky basketball players, poised baseball players, sparring boxers--moments of serene waiting and explosive action. It's a compelling body of work combining an obvious love of the games with an expert eye for emotion and the thrill of the game. Jonas Wood was born in Boston in 1977. He received his MFA from the University of Washington in 2002. He is represented by Anton Kern Gallery, New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago, Black Dragon Society, Los Angeles and RAW & CO, Cleveland.
