Even the latter group will concede that Pickard's handling of the orchestra is dazzling, and the album shows just how much more the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is than a regional orchestra these days. The two shorter orchestral works contrast sharply both with the symphony and with each other. Sixteen Sunrises is an entirely novel approach to the natural tone poem, while the Concertante Variations...
