Kell was the man in the shadow of Adm. Rafael Semmes and a bit of a mystery until you read this book. The book tells the story of an interesting, gifted but unassuming man of faith who was the consummate ship's executive officer.
Those interested in Confederate naval history and especially the CSS Alabama will not be left wanting. There are many insights into American naval officer develpment and training in the years before the war as well as some interesting insights into the Alabama's final battle. A very good read.
