Modern Dance forever
I studied modern dancing from 1967 through 1974. I was honored to take one class at UCLA from the venerable John Martin, then recently retired from his position as Dance Critic for the New York Times. He was a marvelous story teller. In 1970 he knew every major dancer in the world, he knew them personally. He told us stories about the people he knew intimately. Now, nearly fifty years later, I realized that I wanted to know more about John Martin. He influenced my thinking ever since I took this course from him. He taught me the word "equipose" and told us that dance was part of the "dog" we called art. Dance even then was a weak step sister in the art world. Painting, music, architecture, theater, and writing was more important than using your body to dance. I agreed with John Martin then and it has made all the difference in my life. I look forward to reading this book about dance because it will bring back strong memories of the hours we sat at the feet of a master. John Martin encouraged us to see flamenco dancing up close. I followed his instructions and have become a lifelong lover of this great dance form.
