This text details the life of John Bellany, an influential Scottish artist who paints in a native, figurative art style. steeped in Calvinism as a child, his art is profoundly religious in its intimation of mortality and recognition of evil; facts reinforced in 1967 by a visit to the remains of the Buchenwald concentration camp. complexities of the human condition anchored in the rich poetry of the sea, but after moving to London in 1965 to study at the Royal College of Art, his vision and iconography became broader. In the 1970s, when his personal life was in turmoil, his art reflects this in the angst-ridden images. In the 1980s, he painted a series of pictures inspired by his successful liver transplant. major museums and art galleries around the world. This has been published to coincide with a travelling exhibition initiated by the Flowers East Gallery in London which culminates at the 1995 Edinburgh Festival.
