Despite the gap, the stylistic issues are similar, and Rangell's second volume will likely engender controversies similar to those that attended the earlier release. Some find Rangell a genius in Bach; others would evaluate him as a crank, but perhaps a more balanced description is possible. Rangell's is a highly pianistic Bach, and what is interesting is that he accomplishes this without using a great deal of pedal. Instead, he relies on variety of attack, articulation, and tempo. Rangell introduces tempo rubato into antecedent-consequent phrase pairs and even into fugue subjects. For some, this will all be a bridge too far; for others, Rangell will bring out the blooming variety in this highly systematic music.
