Actually he wrote a good deal of music, most of it little explored, that not only transferred Italian styles, but experimented with them in unusual ways. "Musica boschareccia" was apparently an old term for pastoral or sylvan music; in German, Schein calls these pieces Waldliederlein , or "Little Songs of the Woods." All these concepts connoted sexy or even erotic little pastoral songs, and that's what you get here; the Italian term was villanelle , and Schein further dubs them "Villanellische Inventionen." They are indeed inventive treatments of the rather simple villanella: Schein writes them in such a way that they can be performed by various combinations of voices and instruments.
