"Musica boschareccia" was apparently an old term for pastoral or sylvan music; in German, Schein calls these pieces Waldliederlein , or "Little Songs of the Woods." All these concepts connoted sexy or even erotic little pastoral songs, and that's what you get here; the Italian term was villanelle , and Schein further dubs them "Villanellische Inventionen." They are indeed inventive treatments of the rather simple villanella: Schein writes them in such a way that they can be performed by various combinations of voices and instruments.
