Donald Kuspit's essays provide in-depth arguments realizing the incredible influence Jimmy Ernest's work had on artist such as Nancy Graves, Mel Bochner and ultimately has had on Julie Mehretu. The later is certainly indebted to Jimmy Ernst's obsessive line overlays from her earliest work unto the latest (2010).
Besides the intellectualism imbued in Ernst's work, Kuspit has afforded us the opportunity to have more source depth related with most of the work included in this excellent monograph. The reproductions of Jimmy's work are crisp and seemingly accurate. Numerous "art world' people are included in some striking photos as well.
Kuspit's addition of relevant Interviews and poems with and about Jimmy Ernst's work AND life make this an ideal companion with Jimmy's autobiography, "A Not So Still Life." Kuspit certainly opens the door of exploring Max Ernst's life as well.
This is a must read/study for anyone seriously interested in contemporary art.
