The controversial and bestselling bishop and moral activist attempts to wrestle Jesus from the binding ties of religion so he can become the spiritual and moral hero our world needs. Controversial bishop and moral activist John Shelby Spong has been on a lifelong quest to rescue the Church from irrelevance. In JESUS FOR tHE NON RELIGIOUS, he takes aim at the core of the Christian faith: the identity of Jesus himself. He first strips back the myths that have surrounded Jesus for centuries from the virgin birth to his resurrection from the dead. Next, Spong explains how these myths arose because Jesus's followers saw everything he did through the lens of the Hebrew scriptures. With these new revelations, we are then able to see the true Jesus: a heroic figure who revealed divinity through his humanness and can still guide us today. Spong breaks Jesus free from the idol religion has created and restores for us a revolutionary and life-giving figure we all need to meet.

Very compelling argument how one's traditional view of his beliefs leads to an evolving view and practice.
Spong has been honest and downright candid about matters regarding his Faith.

Is Your Faith Whack?
If you believe the Garden Of Eden is more than a myth and the Swallowing of Jonah by a whale really happened, then Bishop Spong's books are not for you. Spong seeks to save religion from becoming irrelevant by interjecting common sense and true humanism and mental health into our view of any putative creator. People who have rejected religious faith because of the likes of John Hagee, Joe Ratzinger, Jerry Falwell, et al can restore themselves to a faith which is both fullfilling and not psychologically harmful by thinking about what Spong has to say. Try it. It can't hurt. His books were given to me, an atheist, by a Rabbi, and I have passed them on to Muslims and non believers. Does your religion teach you to feel disgust toward Gays and Atheists (ie; are you a follower of the three mentioned religious leaders?)? If so, then you should read John Shelby Spong.
