Born on Hayling Island, Hampshire, he pursued his education at Westminster School, Dalhousie University in Canada, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Gray began his writing career as a novelist in 1963 before transitioning to playwriting. His first stage play, Wise Child (1967), marked the beginning of a prolific career in theatre. He gained significant acclaim with works like Butley (1971) and Otherwise Engaged (1975), both of which received the Evening Standard Award for Best Play. In addition to his plays, Gray authored several novels and was known for his candid memoirs, notably The Smoking Diaries series, which provided introspective views into his life and thoughts.
