The book has inexplicably out of print for years, but it is well worth tracking down a used copy.
The book is not a detailed reference nor is it a narrative history but it manages to hit a sweet spot in between. If a plane saw significant, or even non-significant, service during WW II, it will be in this book. You won't find all the details about the plane that a book dedicated to that plane would have, but you will find plenty of information including the changes in engine and armament in different models of the plane, and plenty of verbal description of the origins and outcomes of that plane.
And by reading the various chapters on the planes, the reader will gradually develop a better understanding of how the Japanese aircraft industry performed during WW II. This educational process is aided by introductory chapters as well as appendices.
You can read the book cover to cover but I think most readers will skip around to look up whatever plane they are interested in. It gives pretty much equal coverage to the army and naval air forces. It includes some pre-war planes as well as experimental planes that were being developed as the war ended.
