Probably it was not very far from the "Waggon and Horses" that, in earlier years, the primitive tavern that shared the solitude of the wild and desolate Handsworth Heath in company with the warrener's hut stood. This lonely place of entertainment was chiefly patronised by the fox-hunters who followed the chase from the Hagley to the Wolverhampton Road. Its modest little sign-board bore the inscription "Soho," and the house was possibly n its day the best-known in its locality. The heath remained unenclosed until 1793, nearly thirty years after the inception of the great Soho manufactory. To return to the much later days of my own recollections, which to me seem to lie in a very far-away, though perfectly distinct distance; just as we sometimes see a view of country miles and miles away from us with every hill, every tree, every church spire, and every item in the landscape clearly grouped or sharply silhouetted on a brightly lighted foreground, and a luminous horizon. Thus very vividly, in this now altered Handsworth, I see the beautiful lanes with luxuriant hedgerows that were easily reached after you had passed the "Waggon and Horses," and which wound themselves about the stately park of Sandwell, then as lovely a spot as the eye need desire to look upon. Of course, there were no suggestions of collieries in those days, and no small houses of the modern but necessary type that spring up in their hundreds when hands are wanted to work remunerative but grimy coal pits.
