Vol. 1 is FINE, Vol. 2 NEAR FINE; Both DJ's are VERY GOOD with some shelfwear and light rubbing to extremities. From the DJ flap: "A two-volume work on the fifteenth-century Egyptian scholar Jalal al-din al-Suyuti (A.D. 1445-1505). Vol. 1, in English, gives an account of the life and personality of al-Suyuti, traces the development of autobiographical writing in classical Arabic literature and relates al-Suyuti's "al-Tahadduth bini'mat allah" to that tradition. Volume 2, in Arabic, makes available for the first time a reconstituted text of the autobiography, based on the discovery by Miss Sartain of new source materials. Al-Suyuti was an orthodox scholar of distinction, a commentator on the Koran and Hadith and a noted controversialist. His autobiography contains a lively account of his disputes with his colleagues--indeed it was written to justify his own claims to his contemporaries. It is rare to find personal statements in Arabic autobiographical writing and even more unusual for these to be written in the almost colloquial style adopted by al-Suyuti.
