Jackie Lynn is an alter ego of Chicago-based singer/songwriter Haley Fohr, who is best known for her experimental indie-folk project Circuit des Yeux. The self-titled album revolves around a character named Jackie Lynn, who was born in Franklin, Tennessee in 1990. In 2010, she took a Greyhound bus to Chicago where she met an individual referred to as Tom Strong, and the two allegedly began a multi-million-dollar cocaine business. They were known to throw luxurious parties at an apartment located in Chicago's south side. Eventually the two had some sort of fight, and a domestic dispute was reported, but by the time the police arrived at the apartment they had vanished, and this LP was found at the site. The songs on this album all relate to this concept, and they range from the jaunty party-themed song "Chicken Picken" to the distraught acoustic lament "Jackie." The songwriting is far more straightforward than on Circuit des Yeux's recordings, and all of the songs clock in at under four minutes. Fohr is joined by members of Bitchin' Bajas and Cave, and their Krautrock influences are very evident on this album. The songs typically feature tinny drum machine beats and hypnotic rhythms, along with dusty guitars, evoking feelings of driving across the country under the hot sun, possibly while on the run from the law. Fohr's distinctive baritone vocals are at the heart of it all, portraying the titular character with finesse. At only six songs and two brief synth doodles, the release barely exceeds 20 minutes, making it closer to an EP than a full-length. In some ways, the concept feels under-developed, but at the same time it's a bit refreshing that they touch upon the major points of the story without getting too ambitious and letting the album drag on for too long. Jackie Lynn feels like the audio equivalent of a gripping short story or film, and whether it's a cliffhanger or its own entity, it's an engaging, suspenseful tale. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
