Jamaican producer Jack "L. Lindo" Ruby is probably best known for his work with Burning Spear on the landmark album Marcus Garvey (1975) and its follow-up a year later, the equally as impressive Man in the Hills, the title track of which is included here. Ruby had flair with horn arrangements, and the five-man horn section he assembled for these sessions gave the songs a brooding, deep, and sonorous quality that perfectly realized Spear's vision. But Ruby was much more than a one-trick pony, and he left a small but enduring body of work after his death in 1989. Included here are two songs with the great Justin Hinds ("Too Late," "Fire Is Burning"), a world-weary "Better Must Come" from Delroy Wilson, and "Black Dog" by the Heptones. The two tracks with the Gaylads ( the straight Southern soul of "I Need Your Loving" and the Impressions-styled "The Older the Moon") spotlight Ruby's versatility as a producer. Three horn-driven instrumentals by the Jack Ruby All Stars close out this collection. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
