Molly abandons her husband and asks for protection. In return for information, she is placed in a witness protection program. Growing homesick, she insists on visiting her former neighborhood in the mountains of West Virginia. Arriving in WV she is met by a representative of the protection agency who turns out to be her former high school "crush," Jack Bennett. Molly is hidden in the back of Jack's van during a rare meeting with his younger brother, Clyde Bennett. Suddenly about to be overwhelmed by her former husband's thugs, Jack temporarily dumps Molly into Clyde's care while he, Jack, acts as a decoy to lead the thugs away from Molly. That desperate strategy doesn't work out very well. Clyde and Molly are eventually captured and held prisoner in a coal mine owned by her former husband. Clyde escapes and is united with Jack, but Molly remains a captive and is spirited to Pamlico Country, North Carolina. Both Jack and Clyde search for Molly. Jack is aloof and extremely intelligent plus he has access to information and support from his agency. Clyde is an average guy with an eye for detail and detailed knowledge of the local WV terrain because he and Jack grew up near the mine. Molly's trail leads them both to NC. Molly is not passively awaiting her fate. Slowly she finds an internal strength to survive but that threatens her sanity. This is a riveting, uncommon slice-of-life tale full of twists and turns that rings true to human nature. Jack, Clyde and Molly appear to be just your average family, friend or neighbor, but if the truth is truly known, very few people are "average."
