That's part of the appeal of this release by the Quartetto di Cremona, which puts together pieces ranging from moderately well known to obscure and offers four unique perspectives on the "Italian postcard." Perhaps the highlight is the String Quartet in G major, Op. 80 ("Lodi"), of Mozart, composed when he was 14. The performers offer an ideal early Mozart performance, catching the ebullient spirit, in which he blows past the chamber music models he encountered during his Italian sojourn. Also notable is Cieli d'Italia, for string quartet, commissioned for the present project by composer Nimrod Borenstein. It's probably the most evocatively Italian piece in the set, with the composer's characteristic layered style deployed in such a way as to suggest Italy's landscapes and seascapes.
