Once based primarily on the compilations created by Austrian scholar and artist Johann Adam Bernhard Ritter von Bartsch (1757-1821) in his 21-volume "Le Peintre Graveur." This volume addresses the work of Italian engravers Gian Giacomo Caraglio (1500-1565) and Giulio Bonasone (1498-1574), as well as masters of the school of Marcantonio Raimondi. Subject matter includes biblical, religious, mythological, and fantastic entities and scenes, as well as some ornaments and architectural details. Bonasone is continued in the subsequent volume.
