This book is written for the college-level reader who has background in the social sciences. He thoroughly evaluates the socioeconomic backwardness of majority Muslim nations and appears to draw the conclusion that social change is coming and that Islamic societies are unable to meet the challenges it presents due to the Muslim sense that Islam is the final word and cannot be adapted to suit modern life. Rather, Muslims expect modern developments to adapt to Islam due to its superior, universal, divine nature. He provides an interesting overview of the Muslim educational establishment, showing how little of natural or social science is taught to students in Islamic institutions. He discusses the restrictions of the Arabic language of the Koran to even describe modern scientific concepts. Although I think he is mistaken in his belief that western European culture has "mastered nature," I agree that the industrial phase may not be necessary for all societies, that they can simply learn from the West's successes and mistakes. Muslims have to want to adapt to modern life, and many of them do not seem willing to do this. As Tibi states, somer Muslims seek a "backward utopia" which is not a realistic expectation for the future. We may waste precious years and lives before this becomes clear to them, however, and there are some critical issues affecting life on this planet which leave little time for religious wrangling. I definitely know more about the problems Islamic society faces in the modern world; I just doubt whether Islam can accommodate the changes and remain Islam.
