Towards the end of this time, together with his father and Absalom, an Older brother, he did some trading in cattle, hogs and other live stock. About this. Time an unlucky business ven ture put him in debt nearly two thousand dollars, a large sum for those days. This debt still hung over him when he came to Illinois in the spring of 1824, but, faithful then, as ever.
