Dr. Asimov had a special fondness for these stories and it is easy to see why. When I read them, I imagine him as a little boy sitting on the floor by the magazine rack of his father's candy store, reading with amazement the latest story by Doc Smith. What a wonderful thing that he used his reputation to get these stories collected and published, so they didn't die with the pulps.
