This book about the culmination of the Marine Corps basic combat training boot camp, called te crucible. It is 54 hours with little sleep, only 2 1/2 meals, and a series of team tests. Marines are half-sailor, half-soldier. Even their recruiting slogan is a challenge: Maybe you can be one of us. Just reading about the challenges of boot camp made me want to cry for my Mama, like some of these young boys also think of doing, but don't. Every moment is meticulously planned. There is no free time. Physical training, combat drills, and classes in history, weapons, first aid, and military subjects. They have to learn a new way of speaking; they don't say "I", and they begin and end all sentences with "sir". They learn to work as a team. In the crucible, they pass through 19 stations and courses, each one based on the story of a Marine Medal of Honor recipient. Most of them were rewarded posthumously. Their story is told and the core values that were demonstrated by that Marine are tested in that station. Marines are trained to fight, not to die. They don't practice diving on grenades, yet some have done that, for fellow Marines. The Marine motto is Semper Fidelis (always faithful). This book gave me a new respect for what it takes to become a United States Marine. They also have the second best uniform in the American Armed Forces (I'm partial to Navy whites).
