Laura Martier lives and works in an area not especially known as a fountainhead of jazz, the beaches and outer banks where Virginia and North Carolina come together. For her second album, she has selected songs culled from what is billed as the golden era of contemporary songwriters. These are songs by the likes of folk and rock icons Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, and David Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash, which are not often heard within a jazz context. Teaming with the modern-sounding John Toomey Quartet, the two take these songs under their musical wings, trying to give them a jazz flavor. And like most such endeavors, the outcome is mixed. The essence of the music runs from deeply intense and dramatic, such as "Buy & Sell," through a lovely ballad like "The Warmth of the Sun," to a swinging "A Swallow Song." The latter tune is the platform for exciting work by the quartet. "My Back Pages" by rock & roll/folk superstar Bob Dylan gets dressed in R&B with a drop of country, helped along by the honking tenor of Eddie Williams and Toomey's organ. Folk-rock writer/performer John Sebastian's "Didn't I Want to Have to Do It" is another premiere track where Williams takes his tenor down the hard bop road. Other cuts, which lean toward maudlin self-indulgence, are not as fortunate, and that's no reflection on the performers. It's just that they are trapped by poorer material and, despite their collaborative undertakings, cannot spin musical cloth from inferior raw fabric. Nonetheless, there is some good stuff here that's worth listening to more than once. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi
