I recommend first reading Orlando Figes' excellent book The Russian Revolution : A people's Tragedy to which this book is an excellent epilogue (true, sometimes a bit too detailed).
Then start reading the Soviet novels mentioned in the People's Tragedy.
Russian friends often told me I could never fully comprehend/understand/savour Soviet Lit. (the one where you must read between the lines)
Thanks to O.Figes I come pretty close.
