As well, it provides excellent insights into both the financial and political aspects of electric railway development, and because of the rise of Interurbans, then providing electrical power to the populous in general. Required reading for student who is interested in how we became electrically dependent and addicted! From an Interurban point-of-view, it not only includes information on the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee, the Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin, ad the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend systems but also on the Chicago City lines, the networks of Illinois and Indiana (all Insull owned), and the rivalry with Senator William B. McKinley (Illinois Traction System). The work is scholarly, and superbly referenced. Still, while one finishes the book knowing almost more about Sam Insull that one might desire, the associated information about central electrical power and its development makes this a must history text of the period that almost outshines the story of this fantastic man.

A Great story About a Great Man
This book mangnificently chronicles the astounding achivements of Samuel Insull in the late 19th and early 20th century. The book puts in perspective the debt modern life as we know it owes to this man. From his early days to the period with Thomas Edison and his organization it shows Samuel Insulls canny grasp of facts and oppurtunities put before him. During this period Edison accomplished many great achievemnts due in no small part to Samuel Insull. When Insull organized the first electric utilities in Chicago, his ability again outshone all comers to the utility business, he applied methods of operation and distribution of electricity which set the standard for all utilities in the United States and around the world. The book also shows Insulls ability to operate steetcar and gas utility businesses in the Chicago area and excel where others failed. Later in life Insull's great successes garnered hate and envy from political detractors and enemies, causing him a great scandal forcing him to flee the country. Eventually he returned and was tried by his enemies and exonerated. This book chronicles the life of this man and shows the huge debt we owe to this relatively unknown man for bringing the modern era to the world.
