Excerpt: ...who were assisted in building their houses, because, the first received no assistance whatever; and proprietors who feel doubtful as to the result, would do well to reflect that I have laboured under considerable disadvantages---without the power of an ordinary proprietor--the situation of the land inconvenient--and the estate poor: but, it must be confessed, there have been two strong principles aiding me: the first, consisting in the courage, industry, and 'destitution of the Irish poor, which induce them to encounter the greatest hardships, where there is even the slightest chance of success: the second principle is the vicious apathy of the rich, which leaves the whole labour of the country at the disposition of the ' very few men who have suflicient energy to turn it to advantage. I have reason to hope that there is one of my neighbours about to adopt the plan for improving his property, as above detailed; but the great proprietors, whose lands lie in all directions around me, ' do nothing. They are probably too full of riches and power to feel the necessity of being useful either to themselves or to others. They have looked on their country's agonies without making a single exertion for their removal, whilst they possess means which, if well applied, would have caused those agonies in a great measure to cease, and would at the same time have enormously increased their own powers of self indulgence. The waste land of four individuals alone in Derry, Donegal and Tyrone, Lord Conyngham, Lord Abercom, Mr. Murray and Mr. Ogilby, I have heard estimated at 300,000 acres, and much of it is of the finest quality.
