Excerpt from Inquiries Relating to the Ancestors and Descendants of Job Whipple, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, and Greenwich, Washington County, New York Job whipple was one of the earliest settlers of Greenwich, Washington County, N. Y. The first house in which his family lived there was built by a Mr. Carbine, of Albany County, N. Y. He was a staunch Rhode Island Quaker, and was never seen except in the plain and characteristic dress of his Society. He was a man of comfortable means and good education. His tastes were refined and literary, but joined to other qualifications that made him careful and successful in business. He collected a large library, including many rare and valuable books, such as Goldsmith's His tory of England, one of the first editions of Seneca with antique-looking plates, also some English works of fiction of the highest order, etc., which he, in the true Spirit of the Friends, did not enjoy in selfish exclusion, but generously opened to the public. The Washington for so it was called, became exceed ingly popular, and this institution and its associations were considered among the most powerful aids in developing, educating, and advancing the youth of the vicinity. The library was well cared for, systematically arranged and indexed, and every book had in it a printed label. The influence of a methodical mind could be traced in all the details.
