This handbook fulfils the information needs of anyone working with compressors, including manufacturers, specifiers, users and engineering students. Compression theory is explained with worked examples and every type of compressor is examined, providing a practical guide to selection. Compressors are used in virtually every major process plant. They are essential to pneumatic handling systems, gas recovery, transport and processing, all industrial refrigeration plant including processing and cold storage, and for compressed air supply. This handbook fulfils the information needs of anyone working with compressors, including manufacturers, specifiers, users and students. Gas compression theory is developed from first principles, taking into account the differences between 'ideal' or 'perfect' gases and actual gases and gas mixtures, followed by a similar analysis of the compression refrigeration cycle and systems. Worked examples are provided at every stage, with units quoted in both SI and Imperial. The effects of relative humidity, changes in ambient temperature and pressure, altitude, water injection and condensation, oil injection and removal, and other changes of operating environment are discussed, again with worked examples. Every type of compressor is then examined. A thoroughly illustrated study of their operating principles and practical capabilities enables the most suitable type of compressor to be selected for any application. Operating life predictions are offered, along with the effects of predicted life on wear and performance, and advice on which compressors are best suited to specialist applications such as handling low molecular weight gases, or gases with liquidcontent. Given its comprehensive coverage of both the principles of compressors and practical information on a wide range of types, this book is certain to become the key reference for any professional working with compressors.
