Indiana Jones and the Interior World is the sixth of twelve Indiana Jones novels published in the 1990s. This series, officially licensed by Lucasfilm, is inspired by the Indiana Jones character who first appeared in 1981 with the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. Rob MacGregor authored the first six books including The Interior World. Martin Caidin wrote the seventh and eighth books, and Max McCoy wrote the last four.
The events of this book take place in 1928 and 1929. After conducting archaeological research on Easter Island, Indy is captured by pirates off the coast of Chile. He is brought into an interior world and battles giants, dinosaurs, and swamps. Indy has also been given the task of taking back the alicorn (the horn of a unicorn) from the ruler of this interior world. This ruler seeks to align himself with a ruler of the exterior world and conquer it. Of course, Indy is the only one who can stop this evil plot.
I did like this book as it was a good balance of mystery, archaeology, and adventure. It makes reference to previous books in the series, especially The Unicorn's Legacy (see my review). Thus, it is best to read that book first before reading The Interior World. I learned about Easter Island, Rongo-rongo tablets, the ghost ship Caleuche, the Santa Marta mountains in Columbia, and the Gran Sabana in Venezuela. If you like action, adventure, and Indiana Jones you will like The Interior World.
