I have spared no pains to make it complete and accurate. If it is not so, the fault is my own; for on every side I have met with encouragement and assistance. The fullest sources Of information, in regard to the past and present writers, have been Opened to me by the past and present editors, by the late and present publishers. I am able to furnish the names of the writers of nearly all the principal articles; and Of nearly all the critical notices, except during the editorship of Dr. Palfrey, who is too infirm to give me any information.
