excellent
This book tells you information I didn't know we needed until we were into labor, and we knew what to do to move things along. An excellent resource and a wonderful book I kept in bed with me throughout the pregnancy even after I finished it, went back and reread stories and info. This book and Birthing from Within and The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby week by week were the best of the best of the stack, esp if you want a natural birth, without the complications of recovering from surgery while you're begining parenting.

looooooooooooooooove this book
As a fan of Spiritual Midwifery, I love how this book is split into 2 sections.
The first is great for more of those birth stories, which are great for women about to give birth, or who are scared of birth.
In our society, you can't get enough birth stories out there and Ina May always does a spectacular job.
Then, section 2 gives all this great information for new mom's to use while in the birth process.
I have been recommending this to friends who are thinking about becoming pregnant.
Something which I feel I can't do with Spiritual Midwifery, because it's not really up their alley.
But I feel like this book really is meant for everyone and I have no qualms spreading the word.

Great Book, Bad Naked!
What I like: The first half is all happy birth stories! Some of the last half tells how your body is made to have a baby, and things no one ever tells you about how it works. My cousin/hospital labor and delivery nurse/doula wrote in my book: "This book helped me love my pregnant body even more!" If these women can have babies in a cabin in the woods, a hospital should be no problem! It made me thank God for the good job he did designing women's amazing bodies, except I don't want to see everybody's, which brings me to...
What I don't: Bad Naked photos! Unshaven Armpits Naked! Actually, it's more surprising than bad, so now you are warned. Some of the birth stories are way out there since most are written by commune-dwelling earth mamas (but still happy and positive). Some of the last half is anti-medical-establishment mumbo-jumbo, but most is really good and all worth a read for a different perspective. The GBS section is out of date (the book is 2000 but there was a huge GBS study in 2002).
Overall: Wonderful book, I have read it over and over again, on my last pregnancy I wouldn't read it till the end of the 3rd trimester for fear it would make me go into labor! Seriously though, it is so encouraging to hear happy birth stories while pregnant! I have bought this book over and over but keep giving it away.

A must for all naturally-inclined mothers!
Midwife Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth is a must-read for all expectant mothers who hope to deliver their babies calmly and naturally. I wish I had read this book before my first baby was born! The stories of other women's labors and deliveries near the beginning of the book were my least favorite part, and I saved them until I had read the parts near the back that interested me more. They were inspiring, in the end, though. My favorite parts were the descriptions and pictures of effective birthing positions from around the world. I also found the statistics about out-of-hospital births very comforting.
