This is a short novel that depicts a sad time of post-war dislocation and destitution in 1945-6. The subjects are German children from East Prussia after the capitulation, trying to gather food in Lithuania. Called die Wolfskinder, this is a translation of an original work in Lithuanian, based on some actual cases interviewed by the author. The narrative is composed of different threads from the points of view of several children from a single family, who individually trek across a winter landscape, sometimes finding work and amassing food to bring back, sometimes getting lost. We see mostly kind-hearted Lithuanian peasants, wolves, Lithuanian guerrillas (the forest brothers), and Soviet punitive detachments who can deport people. There are a few uncomfortable passages that accurately portray atrocities from that time.
It's a worthwhile read, but not particularly uplifting. Nor had I expected it to be. Pallid narrative from the perspective of children, often going hungry in a disorienting landscape.
