Unlike so much written today this is a fairly objective analysis of the subject by a professor of religion who actually lived in Burma (Myanmar) for a time. Far different from the gushing pap so prevalent today (as from teachers of the Insight Meditation Society for example) the author keeps his wits about him even when sampling vipassana meditation. If the book's only merit were that it is a voice in the wilderness amongst today's New Age nonsense that would be sufficient. The author is skeptical, incisive, and thoughtful and this book is a delightful exploration of a difficult subject by a clear thinker!. Nemo
