Lana Granger is a liar. She has told so many lies about where she comes from and who she is, that the truth seems like a nightmare she can't quite remember. But she knows one thing for certain: she needs a job. About to graduate from a small college in upstate New York, her trust fund is going to run out. Her mother's dying wish: that Lana do something meaningful, that she uses her life to help people. Lana takes a job babysitting for a deeply troubled boy named Luke. Expelled from schools all over the country, and running circles around his beleaguered mother, Luke is accustomed to controlling the people in his life. He likes to play games. But, in Lana, he may have met his match. Or has Lana met hers? When Lana's closest friend Beck goes missing, Lana finds herself lying again - to friends, to the police, to herself. The story about where Lana was the night Beck disappeared doesn't match with eyewitness accounts. Lana is willing to do almost anything to keep the truth - about that night, about everything - from coming out. Even so, it might not be enough to keep her secrets dead and buried. Someone else knows all about Lana's lies. And they are dying to tell.

WOW!.. Wow that was a crazy book. How does Lisa Unger come up with this stuff? This book didn't start out being one of my favorites. I didn't relate well to any of the characters and didn't get into the book until about midway through it. Then it was hard to put down. There were many unconceivable secrets revealed. The ending was perfect. Good fast read.

Unputdownable
Probably if more people had more time to read all the new books that are published every year, IN THE BLOOD would have won the Goodreads Choice Award in its category for 2014. This book is a five-star unputdownable mystery/thriller.
Reviews of this book that try to avoid spoilers will tell you this is about a college-age girl, Lana, who takes a job babysitting an emotionally disturbed 11-year-old boy after he gets home from school. While I applaud a book review that doesn't give away the story, those reviews don't say enough. This is also the mystery of Lana's life. As a matter of fact, this is even more about Lana than you will realize until the end.
I usually prefer mysteries/thrillers that are just as much mysteries to the main characters as they are to me so that we discover them together. The style Lisa Unger chooses in IN THE BLOOD is MOSTLY facts already known by the main characters but not by the reader so that only the reader discovers mysteries. But Unger presents the mysteries and their solutions so skillfully that she grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go.
