Seeking to close a travel-writing gap of over a hundred years, H. V. Morton goes In Search of Scotland, a land to which he is a complete stranger. The result is a characteristically engaging adventure in a landscape at turns 'enchanting' and 'without mercy'. Amongst many entertaining encounters, he describes a 'sincere Scottish breakfast' served beneath a portrait of Queen Victoria, sings Jacobite rebel songs late into the night at a hotel in Fort Augustus and comes across 'the most grotesque signpost in the British Isles': 'The Village of Glencoe, Scene of The Famous Massacre, Teas and Refreshments, Tobacco and Cigarettes'. Anecdotal, leisurely, full of character and event, insight and opinion, this is travel writing of the very highest order. In 1933 H. V. Morton re-visited Scotland and wrote a companion book called In Scotland Again.

Thoroughly enjoyed re-visiting Scotland. A mix of everything - history, culture, nature, people. You really feel you are travelling along with him.
I have now received others of his books which are also wonderful.

A Trip Through Scotland in 1928
This is more than a travelogue...much more. Morton is well-versed in Scottish history, and as he motors the length and breadth of Scotland, he regales the reader with tales from its past...wars and royalty and superstions, customs. He stays with locals and describes their daily lives and listens to their tales. And what a pleasure to follow his progress by a detailed map of Scotland. This is beautiful picture of a time and place which is no more, causing the reader to feel nostalgic for what she has never known. I first read Morton's "In Search of England" which so enjoyable that I bought all his "In Search of...." books. His wit and humor and erudition make for a thoroughly delightful and informative read, and I'm looking forward to reading everything Morton wrote.
