Since the five-volume funk series In Yo' Face proved successful, Rhino decided to release a collection of gritty, funky R&B and soul from the late '60s and early '70s as In Yo' Face! (The Roots of Funk), Vol. 1/2. It's certainly possible to hear the funk in Lowell Fulson's "Tramp," Dyke & the Blazers' "Funky Broadway," Archie Bell's "Tighten Up," the Meters' "Cissy Strut," and Lee Dorsey's "Everthing I Do Gonh Be Funky," but what makes this such good listening are the obscurities from the likes of Wilson Pickett, Watts ...
