The onward march of secular affairs seems suddenly halted, and the past has found a living expositor in the darkbrown bournouse and the white turban. The estranged look of the eye, the quiet shuffle of the sandal along the stone flagging, the dull passing interest with which strangers are regarded, the shrill pipe of the religious fanatic at the roadside, and the grim airs of the patriarch who salutes us with a " God-will "--all seems more and more demanding of the moment, and proves how removed from, and ignoring of, the great leaping activities of our country and time, is the living present in this land of the Sultan and the Bey. Not even the ungracious interlopirg of foreign charlatanism, or the boisterous innuendoes of modern life in this reposeful world so full of character and color, has deposed that which in every country of the East is supreme, the spirit of mysticism and the noblesse of the conservative Moslem. We see French flounces, English cork hats and American slouch-caps intermixed in incongruous promiscuity with the very crowds of turbans and veils which lend such character and color to the neutral tints of white-washed walls and opaque sky, and drown effectively our own inartistic presences. What a creature of pure and unassimilating nature is the Arab! Bare arms of light bronze thrust out of the folds of a sombre bournouse, cheeks thin and Cassius-like in their hungry look, eyes sleepy and perfect in token of the mysticism of his race, except when intensely roused to action, and then fierce and dancing, like two leaping flames in the depth of the bronze twilight.
