This book was the first assigned reading in my first graduate school class for my MLA. We had twelve students in the class when we started, and our professor warned us that the book had caused some existential upsets in prior classes, most prior classes. By the end of the semester we were down to seven students. One left for family reason, and the other four left because the book and discussions in class brought about for them crises of faith in their religions. No joke. It wasn't pretty. It bothered everyone in the class. It got us all really thinking about things we'd not thought of before, and for me anyway, it was great. Don't get me wrong. It was a slog, but at the end of the day it was great. Kolak doesn't set out to make anyone uncomfortable. The book isn't an attack on anything or anyone. It's exactly what it says it's about: the language and logic of belief, and it's a guide to examining it. It's a hopeful book, just can be something of a difficult journey to take. I can't recommend it highly enough.
