Of the several TV documentaries on the World Trade Center disaster, HBO's In Memoriam: September 11, 2001 is one of the most compelling, simply because it largely dispenses with post-production "sweetening" and allows the eyewitnesses of the tragedy to tell the story through their own words and deeds. Working in concert with 16 different news agencies, the producers have assembled 62 minutes of never-before-seen footage (much of it culled from amateur videos), together with the input of 118 "regular" New Yorkers who comment upon the visuals -- sometimes at the very moment that they're occuring. Among those interviewed are former New York mayor Rudy Giulliani, whose on-the-scene reaction when he sees several unfortunates jumping to their deaths from the burning Twin Towers may well be the most heartbreaking vignette ever captured on camera. Also seen and heard are NYPD commissioner Bernard Kerik, NYFD commissioner Thomas Von Essen, and Giulliani's executive assistant Beth Petrone, who lost her husband in the attack. The haunting background score was provided by the New York Philharmonic. In Memoriam: September 11, 2001 was first broadcast on May 26, 2002. Hal Erickson, Rovi
