Colonial writers have always interested me. Hugh Clifford in particular has a writing style of the period, which I rate comparable to Conrad. Most of his writing was related to his experience as a colonial official which I can relate to as a post independence civil servant in the outback. His writing was not embellished, but perhaps with the affectionate eyes of a foreigner who has grown to love the people he was sent to govern.
