The author had been the American Consul in Edinburgh from 1889 to 1893. The signed inscription also contains a hand written poem by Wallace Bruce: "The crowning need of praise/ To him who makes a People's songs. / Who strikes one note the common good. / One chord a wider brotherhood." (1904).
