New imaging methods have proliferated in recent years and many older techniques have either become more restricted in their application or completely obsolete. It is difficult for clinicians to keep up with these changes, especially since most practicing doctors have had little formal teaching in radiology. As a result, many requests are received in radiology departments for examination which are either inappropriate or unnecessary. This practical book attempts to remedy the situation by encouraging rational and effective use of imaging facilities, enabling a diagnosis to be reached as quickly as possible and avoiding unnecessary referrals. This is particularly important at a time when health care resources are stretched and the public are becoming increasingly aware of the possible hazards of radiation. The opening chapters disuss the general principles of effective use of the radiology department, the techniqus available, the hazards of imaging, and the patient's viewpoint. Following chapters systematically consider good practice in a range of clinical situations. This book will be of value to all hospital doctors and students in day to day practice, and in preparation for higher examinations.
